Niels Bendtsen

Niels Bendtsen was born in Denmark, and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1951,He trained as an apprentice for his father valuable skills and a respect for father, who designed and built Scandinavain furniture and it was here that Bendtsen gained valuable skills and a respect for non-industrial, hand-built traditions. He was also intrigued by new technologies and ways to satisfy increasing demand, Between 1963 and 1972,Bendtsen had his own retail store where he sold his father’s furniture, as well as imported Scandinavian designs. He designed small items for the store, but it wasn’t until he was in his early thirties that he truly began designing furniture. Dissatisfied with the quality and limited functionality of the furniture he recame a full time designer.

Hans J. Wegner(1914-2007)

Hans J. Wegner must be considered as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, Wegner has become a worldwide icon, particularly famous for his influence on Danish furniture design. Wegner began his long career at the age of 14 and worked as an apprentice to H.F. Stahlberg, who was a superb cabinet maker. During this period, he developed a love of wood as a material for making chairs. After finishing his apprenticeship at the age of 17, he continued to work with Stahlberg for a further three years. He completed his education at the Danish school of Arts and Crafts and Copehagen’s Architectural Academy. He has designed over 500 chairs with many different wood types and styles and his style is based in clean and simple lines. From Wegner’s perspective, a chair had to look beautiful from every angle. Wegner’s most famous chairs designs are unquestuinably the “Peacock”, the “Y-chair”, and “The Chair” which was used by Kennedy and Nixon in their famous CBS TV debate of 1960’
